David Thomas, Maureen Grealy and Katharine Holmes are just some of the Yorkshire and Lancastrian artists at a newly opened Autumn exhibition at Gavagan Art in Settle.

A special feature of this exhibition is a spotlight display in the larger gallery room of works by the Malham painter Katharine Holmes.

Katharine a well respected landscape painter has been invited to exhibit a selection of her paintings alongside the work of the British artist J. M W. Turner at the Mercer Art Gallery Harrogate in 2020 in an exhibition that traces Turner’s 1797 tour across the North of England.

David Thomas studied Fine Art painting at Cheltenham, Cardiff and Leeds and has painted continuously since leaving Cardiff in 1989. Continuous and observational drawing is a central activity in David Thomas’ practice.

His paintings are done in oil paint on board, panel or canvas. Most are still-life compositions, observed from the objects in front of him. They start with a long process of drawing and re-arrangement. He is based in Crosshills, North Yorkshire.

Maureen Grealy was born in 1959 and studied fine art painting at Leeds University. Maureen who lives in the Fylde, Lancashire has taught art and photography in a number of colleges in the north of England. Drawing on diverse subject matter for her paintings including historical portraiture, landscape and still life, her preferred medium is oil and gouache.
