Lindsay Ell - Heart Theory

Well over a decade has disappeared since Canada's Country star Lindsay Ell released her debut album, however, it was not until she released 2017's The Project that she found herself propelled into the international spotlight. While there is no rhyme or reason as to why it took so long for the striking vocalist, and even more striking songwriter to make her mainstream mark is anyone's guess, but now she is here, she is determined to show she has the long-term appeal.

heart theory is her first concept record. Written as a personally driven exploration of heartbreak and the wide array of emotions and feelings that are connected with the journey from grief through to healing, heart theory may appear with strangely capitalised song titles, but once you press play, the strange tracklist presentation sinks into obscurity.

heart theory arrives after her John Mayer tribute record and is far stronger that it's predecessor. It is also more cohesive than the album that launched her into the mainstream consciousness. The Project was strong throughout, but heart theory tells a story and connects with its listener on a multitude of levels.

Although the album is essentially a country record, as with all her previous releases, there is a careful cross-genre appeal that widens her audience scope. The 80s tinged wrong girl has hit written all over it, with Haim-esque vibes and Radio 1 within its reach.

While the record mostly packs a punch, it is actually in its most tender moment, the Brandy Clark co-written make you, which explores the aftermath of a sexual assault, that hits the hardest and is set to be remembered in the long run.

heart theory takes a complicated, complex emotional journey and presents in faultlessly in 12 songs, which climax with the optimistic and forward thinking readY to love.

Get ready for all the feels.
