2026 Mercury Prize ‘Albums Of The Year’ Revealed
Newcastle will once again take centre stage for British and Irish music this autumn, as the Mercury Prize confirmed the city will host its 2026 Awards Show on Thursday 22nd October at the Utilita Arena.
The announcement, made in partnership with Newcastle City Council, follows what organisers describe as the Prize's biggest year yet in 2025. This year's ceremony will feature live performances from several of the twelve 'Albums of the Year' nominees, building to the announcement of the overall winner. BBC Music, the Prize's broadcast partner, will provide coverage of the event.
The Mercury Prize has long served as a barometer of British and Irish music, celebrating achievement across genres and frequently launching emerging artists onto bigger stages, both at home and abroad. Last year's winner was a Newcastle name close to home: Geordie singer-songwriter Sam Fender. He joins a recent honours list that includes English Teacher, Ezra Collective, Little Simz, Dave, Arlo Parks, Wolf Alice and Young Fathers.
Selecting that shortlist falls to an independent panel of judges, drawn each year from across the industry. Chaired by Jeff Smith, Head of Music at Radio 2 and 6 Music, the 2026 panel comprises AFRODEUTSCHE, Danielle Perry, Jamie Cullum, Lea Stonhill, MistaJam, Phil Alexander, Sian Eleri, Sophie Williams and Will Hodgkinson.
Behind the scenes, a fresh line-up of partners has been unveiled alongside the venue announcement. LNER returns as Official Travel Partner, once again carrying nominated artists and judges north for the ceremony — a role the operator has framed around the connection between rail travel and music culture. Fenwick, Newcastle's flagship department store, also returns, with plans to dress its Blackett Street windows around the twelve shortlisted albums and host live music and workshops during the Mercury Prize Fringe, alongside an official pop-up selling artist merchandise.
Two names are new to the roster this year. Chauffeur company Bell & Shanks joins as taxi and chauffeur partner, while Freight Island — Newcastle's newly opened food, drink and music venue — becomes the Prize's Official After-Party Partner, promising a line-up of regional, national and international acts once the winner has been crowned.
For a city that has already produced one Mercury champion, October's return of the Prize feels less like a visit than a homecoming.
