Festival favourites Oddsocks are back in town this summer bringing their irresistible mixture of mayhem and family fun with them.
The travelling troubadours return to the sumptuous grounds of RHS Harlow Carr on 30 June and 1 July, with their new take on Shakespeare’s classic tale
Romeo & Juliet.
A family feud divides the community. Violence stalks the streets. But who will dare to look beyond the hate and follow their heart? Enter Shakespeare’s most famous star‑crossed lovers in true Oddsocks style.
Returning with their family‑friendly adaptation of the Bard’s famous play, Oddsocks find humour and heartfelt pathos in the unlikeliest of places. Expect larger‑than‑life characters, playful storytelling and joyful anarchy as the company transforms despair into uplifting comedy.
Will Romeo pull himself together long enough to escape with Juliet? Can the Nurse outwit the Friar? And will the audience help the lovers elope?
All will be revealed as Oddsocks return to Harrogate once again with their energetic take on Shakespeare’s romantic tale.
Formed in 1989 by Andy Barrow and Elli Mackenzie and praised by The Stage for their “great comic timing and superb slapstick”, Oddsocks have been performing as part of Harrogate International Festivals’ summer season for more than 30 years.
Oddsocks’ creative producer Elli Mackenzie said: “Our audience in Harrogate is always so supportive and fun to play to and the beautiful surroundings at RHS Harlow Carr make the experience all the better.
“The future of our work and live theatre in general relies heavily on organisations such as Harrogate International Festivals who have booked our productions since the early 1990s. It’s always a highlight to return.”
Sharon Canavar, Harrogate International Festivals’ Chief Executive, said: “Summer in Harrogate just wouldn’t be the same without an Oddsocks appearance and we’re delighted to welcome them back.
“They have been coming here as part of our summer programme for more than 30 years, bringing joy and laughter to generations of families.
“So pack your picnic, rugs and folding chairs, and get ready for an evening of laughter and mayhem that is suitable for all ages. Just remember to dress appropriately for the British weather and make sure you bring something warm to wear!”
