In Conversation: Jack And Finlay From Walt Disco

Fresh from signing with EMI North, Glasgow’s walt disco return with their electrifying new single, Coup de foudre – a bold, dancefloor-ready anthem that signals an exciting new chapter for one of the UK’s most distinctive alternative bands.

Following acclaimed albums Unlearning and The Warping, and after navigating personal and creative transformation, the group have emerged with renewed clarity and ambition. Alongside intimate UK headline shows and appearances at The Great Escape Festival, Walt Disco is embracing a future shaped by growth, reinvention and artistic confidence. We caught up with the band to discuss new music, fresh beginnings and what comes next. We caught up with Jack and Finlay to learn a little more.

Coup de foudre translates to a lightning bolt of love — what's the most ridiculous thing you've ever become instantly obsessed with?

Buc-ee’s, that chain of insane service stations in the southern states of the U.S.

If Walt Disco were forced to compete on a reality TV show, which one would you absolutely win, and which one would be a complete disaster?

I think we’d win dating shows like I Kissed a Girl/Boy (RIP) or Love Island because we’re unspeakably hot but lose something like The Chase or The Weakest Link cause we’re proper stupid.

The song feels very 'horny, chaotic.' What are the three essential ingredients for the perfect horny-chaotic night out?

1 Pre drinks watching pop girl music videos
2 A DJ that makes you sweat
3 An outfit that barely constitutes clothing

If Coup de foudre were a cocktail, what would be in it, and how many would it take before things got messy?

A really dirty pickle martini with bison grass vodka. I think 5 would be enough to send things west.

You've played everywhere from tiny venues to huge festival stages. What's the strangest thing you've ever seen from a stage?

A traffic collision

If each member of Walt Disco were a different weather phenomenon, what would everyone be and why?

Jack, Hailstones
Finlay, Acid Rain
Charlie, A rainbow
Jocelyn, A bog storm
Lewis, Snow

Your music has always embraced transformation. If you could instantly master any completely random skill tomorrow, what would it be?

I feel intense shame that I, along with the rest of the band, can’t speak another language, so it would simply be learning a language, maybe Portuguese, I’m going in August.

What's a song that would completely shock people to find on a Walt Disco pre-show playlist?

Cookie Jar by Traffic Signs feat Jake The Rapper

If you could swap wardrobes with any artist, living or dead, for a week, who gets the honour?

2k26 Susan Boyle

Growing up can be weird and disorientating. What's something you thought adulthood would definitely include that turned out to be a total lie?

Having money

If Walt Disco had to open a business together that wasn't music-related, what would it be called and what would it sell?

If our career so far is anything to go off, probably selling stuff that not many people want. I’d call it The Pawned Prawn.

Imagine The Warping era and the Coup de foudre era meet in a pub. What happens next?

I reckon The Warping would act very sheepish and intimidated. Coup de foudre would instantly jump to the front of the queue at the bar, order a drink and then walk over to The Warping and take their seat without any resistance.

Which member of the band is most likely to accidentally start a cult, and which member would immediately join it?

Jack would and Finlay would join it.

If your upcoming album could only be described using three completely unrelated objects, what would they be?

1 A brick wall
2 Sandrena estrogen 1mg gel
3 A 100m statue of a god

You've described finding beauty and art through uncertainty. What's been your most unexpected source of inspiration recently — and please tell me it's something bizarre...

I myself was recently inspired to write a song about a bobblehead in my living room, and Jack recently wrote a song because he saw a meme of a dog captioned "It's going to be okay, but it’s going to be different.”

Both amazing songs by the way.
