In Conversation: Thirsty Quireboys

The London-based rock project Thirsty Quireboys returns with God Bless America – Best Of Thirsty, a striking collection that serves as both a heartfelt tribute to the late Guy Bailey and a bold reimagining of the music he created with lyricist Irina D. More than a retrospective, the album becomes an unexpected reunion between Bailey and his longtime musical partner Spike, whose newly recorded vocals breathe fresh life into songs shaped by Bailey’s unmistakable guitar work and storytelling instinct. The album will be released on 5 June 2026.

The album’s title track, God Bless America, recounts the devastating true story of Rosemary Kennedy, sister of John F. Kennedy. Presented to the world as a glamorous debutante before later being subjected to a forced lobotomy at the insistence of her father, Joe Kennedy, Rosemary’s story becomes the emotional centrepiece of the album. During the operation, while she was fully conscious, the surgeons asked her to sing God Bless America; when she stopped, they stopped too.

Set against Irina D’s vivid, tightly focused lyrics and Guy Bailey’s haunting guitar motif, the song moves from romance to horror with chilling elegance. Spike delivers one of the most emotionally charged performances of his career, rising from tenderness to raw intensity as the narrative unfolds. Musically, Bailey’s looping, discordant E-minor phrases become an allegory for the unravelling of the American Dream, echoing the spirit of Jimi Hendrix’s Star-Spangled Banner and the subversive edge of Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the U.S.A.

Guy Bailey and Spike co-founded The Quireboys, writing the songs that took the band from Monday-night pub gigs to international success under the management of Sharon Osbourne. The band toured globally with The Rolling Stones, Guns N’ Roses and Aerosmith, earning gold and platinum records along the way.

Bailey’s later project, Thirsty, began in 2014 when he started collaborating with Russian poet and lyricist Irina D. Together they fused literary storytelling with classic rock songwriting, creating songs inspired by novels, poems, and real-life histories. The project produced three critically acclaimed albums—Thirsty, Albatross, and Nomad—all produced by legendary engineer and producer Chris Kimsey.

Irina D recalls: “I loved working with Guy on these songs. He was very well-read, and his home was always full of books—Master and Margarita, Last Exit to Brooklyn, and Moby-Dick. The first song we ever did was Donnie to Sonny. I showed him a poem I had written, and whenever a story resonated with him, Guy would disappear into the studio and turn it into music. It was beautiful.”

Originally, God Bless America – Best Of Thirsty was conceived simply as a tribute compilation. The plan was modest: Spike would appear on just one track, '10', '7', and possibly 6'. But the first vocal take changed everything."

Chris Johnstone explains: “There’s such a unique chemistry between Spike’s voice and Guy’s guitar playing. It gave us all goosebumps to hear it again after so long. One song quickly became two, then three, and before we knew it we had a whole album.”

Spike himself reflects: “To get the chance to make a record again with Guy was really special. It was inspiring and heartbreaking at the same time.”

The resulting album was remixed and shaped under the guidance of Chris Kimsey, whose long history with both The Quireboys and Thirsty gave the project continuity and emotional depth.

Kimsey says: “Spike’s voice has always complemented Guy’s guitar playing perfectly. Hearing these songs reborn in that way was a really happy accident, and I was delighted to be part of it.”

The album revisits many of Thirsty’s most celebrated narrative songs, including Donnie to Sonny, which explores the true-life bond between mobster Sonny Black and undercover FBI agent Joe Pistone (Donnie Brasco); Flawless, inspired by To Catch a Thief and the 2013 Cannes jewellery heist; Albatross, a reimagining of Coleridge’s Rime of the Ancient Mariner; Chaos, introduced by Biey reciting Pilgrim’s Progress; and Orlando, inspired by Virginia Woolf’s gender-shifting literary classic.

For Irina D, storytelling was always central to the project: “When I brought Guy a lyric, the first thing he wanted was the story behind it. He needed to connect emotionally before he could write. Once he did, he had an extraordinary ability to find the musical heart of the story.”

Musicians who worked with Bailey consistently describe his guitar style as instantly recognisable yet difficult to imitate. Drawing influences from Steve Cropper, Wilko Johnson, Mike Campbell, and the groove traditions of Motown and reggae, Bailey blended deceptively simple rhythm and lead lines into something uniquely his own.

Drummer Simon Hanson says: “Guy was a fabulously talented musician and songwriter, even though he always tried to downplay it. The Thirsty project was unusual — Irina would bring these incredible poems and stories, and Guy would transform them into songs. It really did feel a bit like Elton John and Bernie Taupin.”

More than a compilation, God Bless America – Best Of Thirsty is a rare and unexpected posthumous collaboration between Guy Bailey and Spike, reimagining Bailey’s songs through new vocals, duets, and remixes that bring renewed clarity and emotional weight to the music he created with Irina D.

At its heart, the album is both a celebration and an evolution: a final collaboration between two lifelong friends and a testament to the enduring creative spark of Guy Bailey. It also honours another important part of his life. Away from the stage, Bailey worked with young people through Nordoff & Robbins, using music to help and inspire others. In recognition of that legacy, proceeds from the album will support the charity.

As Irina D., Spike, and Chris Johnstone put it: “Guy Bailey was the heart and soul of both The Quireboys and Thirsty. We hope listeners come away understanding what a uniquely gifted songwriter, guitarist, and storyteller he was—and why those of us who knew him felt it was so important to keep this music alive.”
