With nearly 100 million records sold since his eponymous debut was released back in 1980, Bryan Adams is far bigger than just one of Canada's highest selling artists, he is one of the world's. As he returns in the build up to his 16th studio album, Roll With The Punches, and his latest single Make Up Your Mind he proves that he has not lost any of his radio appeal nor his distinctive edge. With a UK tour scheduled in the not too distant future, we were privileged to have a brief chat with the music icon to learn a little more.
Very well thanks. We have just got back from a couple of weeks of gigs in Las Vegas
We are so excited about your new single, Make Up Your Mind— tell us the story behind it.
I called up my mate Eliot one day and told him I had this idea for a song, Make Up Your Mind, and within a week we had a song, and without ever being in the room together, all over the phone. It seems that’s how most songs are written these days.
And what is your key ambition for the forthcoming new album?
I wrote a song on my 2015 album Get Up called Go Down Rocking – I think that about sums up where my head is... And where it's been for the past decade
This is your 16th studio album – what is the biggest lesson you've learnt from a record to date?
Just have fun with it – there’s no point in getting your expectations up when there’s so much music about. Just make the best record you can make and have a laugh.
Looking back, is there somewhere you should have turned left but turned right?
For sure, but isn’t that just life? You can’t always change the past, but you can the future, and I kind of live by that more than ever.
You balance your career as a photographer with your music career. Do you have any other unfulfilled ambitions?
Maybe like being a botanist? That wouldn’t be too bad, actually, but I’m OK with music and photos. It keeps me very busy.
We want to get to know a little more about your musical taste. Tell us a song (and a reason) that makes you:
Smile: A new idea or song
Cry:Let It Be Me by The Everly Brothers
Laugh: Monty Python's Lumberjack Song
Feel nostalgic: Early Beatles
Dance in the kitchen: That’s actually a good Song title... Sing in the shower. Splish Splash by Bobby Darin
What stage have you not performed on that you dream of?
The Odeon Roman Theatre at the Acropolis in Athens, Greece.
Lastly, you can achieve one thing by the end of the year – what is it?
Protest the filthy wars in Palestine and Ukraine.
