London Concertante Announces Three Candlelit Concerts Across Yorkshire This June
Internationally acclaimed chamber orchestra London Concertante will bring three atmospheric candlelit concerts to Yorkshire in June 2026, with performances at Leeds Minster, Sheffield Cathedral and Selby Abbey.
The season begins with Radiohead Reimagined by Candlelight at Leeds Minster on Friday 12th June 2026 at 7:30pm, followed by A Night at the Opera by Candlelight at Sheffield Cathedral on Friday 19th June 2026 at 7:30pm, and Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and The Lark Ascending by Candlelight at Selby Abbey on Saturday 20th June 2026 at 7:30pm.
Together, the concerts showcase the breadth of London Concertante’s programming — from the music of one of Britain’s most influential bands, reimagined for orchestra, to some of opera’s greatest showstoppers and two of the most beloved works ever written for violin.
At Leeds Minster, Radiohead Reimagined by Candlelight will transform songs including
No Surprises, Fake Plastic Trees, Everything in Its Right Place, Reckoner and
True Love Waits through the immersive palette of a live orchestra. Arranged for strings, harp, woodwind and percussion, the concert brings the emotional intensity and sonic imagination of Radiohead to a striking candlelit setting.
The following week, London Concertante will bring A Night at the Opera by Candlelight to Sheffield Cathedral, featuring four vocal soloists: soprano Claire Wild, mezzo-soprano Rebecca Afonwy-Jones, tenor Dominick Felix and baritone Philip Smith. Accompanied by the orchestra, they will perform a selection of much-loved arias and ensembles by Mozart, Puccini, Verdi, Rossini and Bizet.
The Yorkshire run concludes the next evening at Selby Abbey, where violinist Jonathan Martindale will join London Concertante for Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and
The Lark Ascending by Candlelight. A dynamic and expressive performer, Martindale will take centre stage in Vivaldi’s
The Four Seasons and Vaughan Williams’
The Lark Ascending, two works that showcase the violin at its most vivid, lyrical and atmospheric.
Known for his warmth, virtuosity and instinctive communication with audiences, Martindale is an ideal soloist for this evocative candlelit programme. In the historic surroundings of Selby Abbey, audiences will hear the drama of Vivaldi’s seasonal concertos alongside the soaring lyricism of Vaughan Williams’ much-loved pastoral masterpiece.
All three concerts will be performed by candlelight, creating an intimate and memorable atmosphere for audiences, whether they are regular concertgoers or discovering orchestral music for the first time.
Chris Grist, Artistic Director of London Concertante, commented: “We’re delighted to be bringing three very different candlelit programmes to Yorkshire this June. These concerts show the range of what London Concertante does best — from reimagining Radiohead for orchestra, to the drama and theatricality of opera, to the expressive beauty of the solo violin. Leeds Minster, Sheffield Cathedral and Selby Abbey are all wonderful settings for live music, and each evening promises something unique.”
