Zombies Shuffle Into Saltaire As Shaun Of The Dead Hits Victoria Hall
There are few films that can claim to have made a cricket bat, a Queen record and a pint at the Winchester essential tools of survival, but
Shaun of the Dead managed all three – and this Thursday it lurches onto the screen at the Victoria Hall in Saltaire.
Edgar Wright's 2004 zombie comedy, which he co-wrote with Simon Pegg, has long since graduated from modest British release to genuine cult classic. Pegg plays Shaun, a put-upon London electrical salesman whose life is going nowhere in particular – until the dead begin to rise, and he finds himself attempting to rescue his mother, win back his girlfriend and sort out his relationship with his layabout flatmate, ideally all before last orders. Nick Frost, Kate Ashfield, Lucy Davis, Dylan Moran, Bill Nighy and Penelope Wilton complete a cast that has aged rather better than the undead.
The screening (Cert 15) takes place on Thursday 8th October, with doors opening at 7pm and the licensed bar ready for anyone wishing to follow Shaun's crisis-management strategy.
Audiences arriving early will be rewarded with something no multiplex can offer: from 7.30pm, David Lowe will be at the console of the hall's Wurlitzer organ for a prelude that includes music from
The Phantom of the Opera.
Spine-tingling organ music, a darkened hall and a crowd of people moving slowly towards the bar. The zombies, it seems, won't be the only ones feeling at home.
